16-18/09/2026 - International conference "Foundations of Arabic Linguistics" 8

The eighth edition of the “Foundations of Arabic Linguistics” conference series will explore how scholars defined, negotiated, and interpreted the norms of the Arabic language.

Building on foundational studies and more recent inquiries into the transmission, development, and reception of the Arabic linguistic tradition, it seeks to bring together investigations of several key aspects of classical Arabic linguistic heritage.

Topics of particular interest include the connection between norms, variation, and the impact of these on linguistic models and discussions, the influence that specific interpretative needs could exert on the development of central theoretical concepts as well their intersection with trends in broader Islamic intellectual history, and the way in which Arabic linguistic lexicon embodied the categories and interpretative frameworks that shaped linguistic inquiry.

28-29/05/2026 - ALiDiM workshop “Linguistic traditions in contact: knowledge circulation and exchange from Athens to Baghdad”

The workshop explores various aspects of linguistic interaction and knowledge transfer in the Mediterranean and Near East world ca. the first millenium CE.

Bringing together specialists in Arabic, Syriac and Greek, it will explore traditions of linguistic theorizing and instruction in late Antiquity and early Islam.

With particular attention to the various patterns of interaction between these traditions, it offers cross-disciplinary perspectives on the complex stratigraphy of language use in pre-modern Eurasia.

The event will be held in English.
