Synopsis

One night, near Tangier, a small group about to embark on a boat: the narrator Azzouz and his cousin Reda, who has managed to escape from a network of beggars; a young woman with her son in search of her husband who emigrated to France; an Algerian teacher who survived a massacre; a Moroccan, Yusef, who has lost his entire family; and two Malians fleeing from an inclement and ruthless land. All united by the same commitment: to wrest a new life from destiny, a second chance. They leave behind lives cut short by fate and misery. An existence marked by corruption, violence and the lack of opportunities of a society that drags itself indolently to the tiresome rhythm of decomposition. His last outing is Morad, the "hook", three times expelled from Europe, and the sinister boatman who will pass them the Strait.
