It’s about time

If you listen very carefully, up and down the street,
you’ll hear the gentle engines of the trees
as they begin to turn again
after all the weeks and months
spent fast asleep.

Soon they will begin to fly their bright, green flags
and breathe in all that we exhale
unthinkingly from our machines
and store it in the widening rings
that are the legacy we leave

for those who’ll strive to read
what we were.
